Model quality is the visible variable; the retirement calendar is the one that shows up as a rebuild. Anthropic's model deprecation documentation commits to at least 60 days of notice before a publicly released model is retired, and runs a four-stage lifecycle: active, legacy, deprecated, retired. For a small team that has wired one model string into a production workflow, those 60 days are the entire planning horizon. The documentation does not promise how long a model stays active before that clock starts.

The Opus explainer demos suggest production effort is shrinking. Anthropic's new Sonnet release adds a lower-cost design-capable option; repeatable revisions and editable files may become the commercial test.
